Getting Involved

If you're interested in becoming a Student Senator, or just want to work on one of the committees or a specific issue/program, check out the following ways you can get involved!

Run for Election

One of the best ways to get involved at URI is to run for election to Student Senate. As a Senator you will be among the influential leaders of the campus, working to represent your fellow students and make decisions that affect our University. Elected Senators may work on several committees reserved for members of the Student Senate-- such as SOARC (student organizations), Finance, Rules & Ethics, and Bylaws.

Join a Committee

There are four committees that any student may join and vote on, even if they are not a member of the Student Senate. These committees are Academic, Campus, Cultural, and External; each committee handles issues relating to the various aspects of university life and works to create programs, services, and policies that will enhance the student experience at URI. Check out the committee pages for an overview of what they're working on and how to become a member.

Become a Liaison

URI is a very large campus, with eight academic colleges, two major housing groups, and several other key populations that need a strong tie to the Student Senate. In order to maintain a strong relationship and communication with these groups the Senate appoints Liaisons-- students who are specifically charged with informing the Senate of issues within their demographic and relaying important information back to them from the Senate. Check out the available positions and their duties on the Senate Liaisons page.

Speak at Public Forum

At every General meeting (Wednesday 6:30 p.m.), time on the agenda is reserved for students and other members of the University community to address the full Senate. Students, faculty, administrators and community members are encouraged to share their ideas and concerns, whether it's raising awareness about a problem, suggesting an improvement, asking for assistance, or making an announcement. For students, public forum is the perfect way to tell your representatives what's on your mind, and for student organizations it's a good place to announce upcoming events! Sign up for public forum in the Senate Office (before Wednesday at 12:00 p.m.).
